What's your story? What jobs / careers have you had?

  • I was a bit tech nerd as a teenager. Ran a BBS (sort of precursors to today's internet message boards) when I was in middle school and had a job programming before I was out of high school. My wrists went gimpy and I hated it so I drove a cab for a year and then moved out to LA where I got a job as an assistant engineer in a recording studio. Hated that, so moved back and had surgery for the carpal tunnel. Got some freelance programming work and it eventually led to starting a company in social media (before the term existed) and a VP of Development position. Wrists went bad again, so did the economy, and I'm done with computers. Back in school full time studying business administration with the plan to open a brewery when I get out.

I know people go back to school in their 40s and 50s, but I'm 33 and feel old as hell. Especially when it comes to algebra, I don't remember any of that shit from high school and had to start at the beginning. Factoring polynomials... I've been a database programmer and I didn't need to know what a polynomial is, much less how to factor them. Unless you're going into physics or want to be a math teacher, you don't need to know that crap!

  • Dude, Life isn't that bad!... I'm 49 and trying to finish up an Associate's in Computer Information Technology. I'm in the same Algebra class (different school). I don't need it for the degree. I've taken it to keep the option open to join the Nursing program.

I had the same class over 30 yrs ago......plus 3 semesters of Calculus and a semester of Differential Equations. I thought this class would be a bunny.......1st class I realized I not only didn't remember any of that crap.......I didn't even remember that I had ever forgotten it.

I have had to work much harder in this class than I expected. I am glad to say that going into my Final Exam this Tues evening that I am carrying an average thru the 3 exams in the class of 96.5%.

You can do this! The Big Blue Nation has faith in you.

  • It's all good, man. I didn't mean to sound negative. I'm doing well, even in Algebra, although like you I'm spending more time on it than I thought.

  • Pretty sure everyone knows what I used to do. Add a million different things after that and I never was happy. I married my beautiful wife and she made it possible to become a stay at home dad. Which is pretty much awesome now that all the kids are in school. BTW BigT if you need help at that brewery, you let me know. I wont take full payment in beer, but it might be close.

Be careful BigT... I've witnessed this man's drinking abilities. Even a "partial" payment in beer will be enough to swallow up the majority of your profits.

    cheers

Btw, I've been a porn star and a bull rider. I was terminated from both professions for the same damn reason... I couldn't last 8 seconds.

I'm a nurse. I prefer the term health care associate or just call me Greg Focker RN. I work at a place for intellectually disabled(mentally retarded) adults. Its the best place I've ever worked by far. I could make a little more money elsewhere but hanging out with retarded people is the most fun I've ever had at any job. I work midnights and mostly they sleep but these people love me and I love them. Nursing school is the absolute worst by the way. While I was in college(Brescia University, psych degree=nothing degree) I worked at a place in Owensboro called Toyotetsu Mid America driving a fork lift while trying to play on the golf team. Got that job when we found out my wife was pregnant. Trying to save up when we both got out of school. Worked selling selling cars in Louisville when I got out. Then drove a Shwanns truck in Bullit County and Louisville. When I realized that I couldn't find a decent paying steady job thats when I went to nursing school in Madisonville. Originally from Muhlenberg County. My Grandad, Dad, and brother in law all either woked or are working at TVA(Paradise Coal Prep Plant). You know the John Prine song. YEP.

Not sure why I just told everyone that but there it is. Bored at work.

  • First job was as a cashier/bag boy at a grocery store (Red Food Store, now known as Bi-Lo) in high school in Chattanooga.

Next job was as a tour guide at Ruby Falls down in the cave. Stayed there for 5 yrs all through college st UTC, but also had other jobs at the same time, such as waiter at a steakhouse, golf caddy and runner at a law firm.

Then I moved to Birmingham for law school and afterwards I landed a position w/ the firm I currently work for where I have been since 2003, with nearly 100% of my practice devoted to civil defense work defending automobile manufacturers in product liability litigation, such as SUV rollovers, fire cases, etc. We are the "good guys" who defend the companies being sued by the ambulance chasers.

    I flagged Math 109 TWICE....

Thank God for the retake option and for the professor who dropped me from her class unbeknownst to me.

I still get cold sweats in nightmare sprints to the Chem Phys Bldg trying to not miss my final.

    Screw Algebra.

Brew a nice Apple Cicer and I'll be right over.

  • Nice thread, nice to find out a little bit about people! As people know a bit already I'm rather a wandering soul!

I grew up in Hartlepool, England (boring coastal down, don't visit) and had my first job as a waiter through college (kinda like your last year of high school and all that Math 101 shit you do at uni before getting to your actual degree stuff) before heading to Uni in Leeds to study Japanese, after 3 months and the Mumps I dropped out and returned home and worked full time in a call centre selling phone upgrade for 9 months 'til I could return to uni for attempt no.2. This time I made better choices and studied Sports Journalism at UCLAN in Preston.

In my second year of uni I ended up at the University of Kentucky to do my second year on study abroad, bought season tickets to football because it was 35 bucks (or 17 pounds at the time) and went from there. Ended up being there for the Georgia win and got to be courtside at Rupp for a couple of games as a photographer, which was amazing! Absolutely loved the place and would move back tomorrow as you all know!

Finished up uni and split up with my ex from KY, decided to take my savings and go to Australia for a year, had an absolute blast and headed home in time to start searching for a job in the beginning of the recession; wasn't a good time for graduates and had my teaching qualifications (for a 2nd language) from Oz and decided to apply to every country I fancied living in.

Ended up in Vietnam, did a year out here, went backpacking round China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and India for a couple of months, popped home and now I'm back in Vietnam 4 months into my second years contract. Pretty good life out here but it can be frustrating at times!

I'm 25 now and not sure what's coming up after this, more adventuring or settling down are both possible, we shall see!

  • As a kid I worked as a farm hand, busboy, waiter, cook, and sat the elderly too. During the summer I would go to Florida and worked as a roofer.

Joined the Army and was a military policeman.

While going to college for Computer Science and Business Management I worked as a security specialist before getting my current job as an I5 series computer operator.

  • Really like this thread. Anyway, I joined the Army at 17 (2003) and worked for almost 5 years as an Infantryman. I know the are some Marines on this board, and guys, I tried to go that route but it just didn't work out so don't hold it against me too much, lol. I was stationed for the most part in Texas, but spent a year of my time in Korea. I was extremely lucky to only spend about 16 total months in Iraq and 0 time in Afghanistan during my military career. Met my wife during my time in Texas, and when we found out that our little girl was on the way, I decided not to re-up and got out in 2008.

Degreeless, and now jobless with a baby on the way in an absolutely horrible economy, reality was setting in harshly. Wanted badly to be a cop in Lexington (born and raised), but they had frozen hiring and things weren't looking to start back up at the time. I decided to apply for the Border Patrol and it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Took two years to get through all the hoops (background, poly and mountains of paperwork), and those were two very tough years, but well worth it in the end. Love what I do and while I would love to be living in Kentucky, living in San Diego isn't too shabby.

I honestly had no idea what to expect from this job, and really was viewing it as more of a stepping stone to something better, but man what a hidden gem this job has been. I am a Federal Agent who does almost no paperwork, and get to track people and "drogas" through the mountains east of San Diego. I am having a blast out here so far, and getting compensated better than I ever thought I would be. Awesome gig, and this guy isn't going anywhere any time soon.

  • After high school I spent 7 years working in the furniture delivery & moving business.....steady, but back breaking work for sure. At 25, I was hired by a fairly large chemical company here in Tennessee, and 27 years later, I'm still there. Started out as a janitor for a couple of years, moved into manufacturing, and I'm now an operations planner in the specialty film & sheet tech services department. It doesn't always work out that way everywhere, but sometimes being dependable, doing a good job, taking a genuine interest in the job you are doing , and going the extra mile on occasion can sometimes make up for lack of a degree....I consider myself very fortunate...

  • I want to get a government job after I get out of school. Nothing like working for the government, whether it's local, city, state, or national. Retire when I'm 55, have taxpayers pay for my exceptional pension plan. I'd vote against bills that would force me to pay 10-15% of my healthcare. I'd become a democrat. I want the government to provide me with the most for the least amount of work that I can do possible!

  • After the above slam, I guess I better offer up the real story (summarized of course)

In my teens, my first job was at a golf course... I drove a cart around all day picking up trash and made sure all carts were parked and plugged in. After H.S., I joined the Marines and was a Military Police Officer. When I got out of the service, I sold cars for a while until I decided what direction I wanted to go. At the time, I was in Woodbridge, Va and not sure if I was going to stay in the D.C. area or move back to Louisville. It was hard to leave my Marine friends, but I came back to Louisville anyway. At that time, I wanted to join the Louisville Police Dept, but affirmative action got in the way and I was passed up for the inexperienced, lesser qualified applicants.... so I went to work for the Dept of Corrections as a Prison Correctional Officer.

Being disgusted with the low pay for CO's in Ky, I moved on and did everything in the bar business from bouncer to bartender. When my son was born... my wife decided FOR ME (haha) that I should leave the night life and get a REAL job again with benny's. I landed a job with a steel forging plant who forges (or has forged) things from axles and air-plane shafts to missile warheads for the military. That was in 1992... I'm still there today. However, I left for a long while and came back. During one long layoff period, I traveled around the country working in the Wind Turbine Industry, as well as, working as a journeyman boilermaker building new power plants.. great paying jobs, but I missed my family too much and hated living out of a suitcase. I was selling cars again when, THANKFULLY, I received a phone call asking me if I wanted to come back to my job at the plant. I gladly accepted. I've since, moved into a higher skilled trade position and things are going well. I've been blessed for sure.
