Kentucky received good news on Thursday when Maxwell Smith looked good enough in practice to prove he is ready to play in Saturday's Southeastern Conference home opener against South Carolina.
The Cats will also move senior Martavius Neloms from cornerback to safety, a position he played all of 2011. Neloms had moved to corner in training camp when redshirt freshman Marcus Caffey was ruled ineligible for the 2012 season. Safety Ashely Lowery's concussion-like symptoms have him doubtful to play against the Gamecocks, leading to Neloms' move back to his natural position.
“We worked Tay Neloms at safety more this week, the reason being because of Ashely Lowery (being injured),” Kentucky coach Joker Phillips said. “The reason why we're able to do that is because of how we feel about those young corners. That allows us this week to have Tay Neloms play more safety. He can go back and forth between safety and corner.”
